Beginner-friendly stitch pattern: Mistake Rib

The mistake rib stitch is a perfect knitting stitch pattern to try out for new knitters. All you need to know to pull this off is literary how to do knit and purl stitches. It’s also a one-row repeat, which makes it super easy to memorize!

We’re talking about the very basics here, and yet this pattern looks rather complicated. A great combination if you ask me 🙂

The mistake rib stitch pattern is very similar to regular 2+2 ribbing, which you can learn more about here!

The difference is the “mistake” that happens at the cast on. By casting on 1 stitch less than for the regular ribbing the pattern will be displaced by one stitch at every other row. This messes up the columns of knit and purl stitches and creates a new more textured and squishy fabric!

Reversible stitch pattern

The Mistake rib stitch is reversible, it looks the same on both sides, which makes it perfect for projects where both sides are visible like blankets, scarves, and dishcloths.

Mistake rib stitch in the round

When knitting this stitch in the round there are two rounds to remember. It’s a good idea to place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round to keep track of when a new round starts.

Cast on: in multiples of four

Abbreviations:
K = knit, P = purl

Round 1: *K2, P2* repeat *–* to the end of the round
Round 2: P1, *K2, P2* *repeat *–* to the last 3 stitches, K2, P1

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 for as long as you like.
